FAQ

Do you have to be fluent in English to become a member?

Simply put, no.

Although the majority of our events will take place in English and being proficient in English will be very valuable, you don't necessarily need to be proficient in it. We strongly believe that JEC will be a great opportunity for you to hone your English speaking skills as you will have the opportunity to communicate with people from different backgrounds and different parts of the world. In the future, we may also occasionally host some events in German.

Does it cost money to participate in the Club - is there a membership fee?

No, membership in the club is completely free to students as the Club wants to ensure equal participation from students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

How selective is the Club?

Acceptance rate varies from year to year but remains selective. Applicants should demonstrate engagement, leadership, curiosity, and a drive to make an impact in their community. You can learn more under our Admissions tab.

What kinds of events does the Club host?

The JEC hosts various events throughout the year, the biggest events being the Club’s quarterly Economic Forums. Each Economic Forum features distinct keynotes speakers in the fields of entrepreneurship, business, and finance. JEC members have the opportunity to pose questions to the speakers and brainstorm new ideas for solutions and innovation. The forums also offer the opportunity for JEC members to connect with leading figures of the business world as well as students from around the world.

In addition to the quarterly forums, JEC Berlin members will also be able to attend our monthly events which are a mix of in-person and virtual events. Event topics will include a mix of informative, e.g. an Introduction to the E-commerce industry, and skill-building, e.g. personal finance and interview tips. As a JEC Berlin member you will also have the chance to attend JEC Chicago’s virtual events which are offered on an almost weekly basis. Many events offer exclusive access to interesting aspects of the business and economics sectors. Past events include "navigating the financial markets," "how to conduct market research," "career journey in economics and business," and "how to build a professional, personal brand on social media."

What kinds of opportunities does the Club give to its members?

The JEC serves to first and foremost offer a platform of economic discussion for the best, most determined high school students. Being a member of the JEC opens an invaluable set of connections with some of the best students around the world, along with leading figures in Berlin's entrepreneurship, business, and finance sectors. JEC members have the chance to find internships through the network they will build by attending JEC events.

Apart from this JEC equips its members with valuable transferable skills such as leadership, communication, and analytical thinking as JEC aims to prepare our members for their future in the workforce.

Do you have to be enrolled in an economics course at your high school to become a member?

No, many of the Club’s members are not enrolled in economics courses at their high school. While it is necessary for economics to be a passion of every applicant, a course is not required and not taking one does not reflect negatively on an applicant.

What is the age range of members?

JEC is a platform for high school students so the age range is typically between 14-18 years. Students who are currently attending grades 8-12/13 are encouraged to apply.
